D3 | ULTRA-V Encore Key Points:
Signal Hill CA, October 26, 2011, The D3 Group in conjunction with various key industry partners has built a vehicle worthy of an Encore at the 2011 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, NV. Built on the CTS-V Sedan platform and featuring a complete D3 Ultra V powertrain and suspension package, D3 took it one step further by transforming the body to extreme proportions. This is a purpose built vehicle designed to show the highest level of Cadillac tuning performance & styling without compromise. Ultra V, was a name that was given to this vehicle because it required D3 to push the boundaries as builders and do what most said couldn’t be done. For starters they replaced the already huge 3.6L Ultracharger and installed the latest creation from the lab, a gigantic 4.2L Ultracharger System. To put that into perspective D3 took off the V6 sitting on top of the engine and replaced that with a V8 on top of the already huge V8. If that wasn’t enough, they turned the boost up to 30 psi. For those that are trying to add up the math, that equates to 11.2L worth of total displacement between the 427 cid engine and the 4.2L Ultracharger. D3 assembled a very special Aluminum block for this application that has been prepped for extensive extreme usage by way of completely custom forged internals & billet main caps. All of that power makes its way through the fully built and prepped transmission complete with Setrab coolers. The real tell tale sign this car is a ringer is the custom built ford 9” rear differential D3 squeezed underneath this beast. Complete with custom half shafts and drive shaft, the rear end is ready to support all the power they plan on throwing it at time after time. Just to make sure they keep things cool in the rear end, D3 fitted the vehicle with their vaunted rear differential cooling kit to maintain reasonable temperatures while at speed. With the understanding there is no free lunch; D3 knew it had to address heat. So they created the largest front mount liquid intercooler possible and then made it twice as thick. The result is an extremely efficient system that has greatly reduced under hood temps and virtually eliminated heat soak by use of an industry exclusive core material. D3 kept the theme going by installing all new cooling components, from pumps to radiators, if it kept the car cool it was upgraded. What you may not notice is the engine bay and bumper ducting D3 used to channel cool air to critical key areas to reduce under hood temps. To further assist the under hood engine cooling, D3 added a fully functional carbon fiber twin scoop hood to scrape the hot air off the top of the engine and exhaust it over the front windshield. Since the Ultra V is a California based vehicle and the build requirement stipulated that the vehicle needed to be pump gas friendly, D3 opted to outfit the vehicle with a state of the art methanol injection system to keep temps down and increase octane well past the 91 octane rating. D3 even put an experimental specialized thermal coating on the headers to drastically reduce temps. D3 has worked with many OE suppliers and for the exhaust they called on Kooks with their long tube headers and high flow cats. All of this is pushed through a custom exhaust system after the cats and tuned to the mindful ear of D3’s development team. At the end of the day this needs to remain as a Cadillac but not compromise the performance levels required to achieve the end goal. Throughout the build process there were many questions in regards to the build. The most common question was how you are going to get that power to the ground. D3 has worked with Race Logic out of the UK to develop the first and only aftermarket integrated traction control system for the CTS-V application. The results are maximum traction at all times when activated. When it’s not activated you get 100mph burnouts! To provide a nice solid foundation for the new traction control system D3 outfitted the vehicle with 20×13 Modulare M14 3-piece forged wheels in a polished finish wrapped in a set of Nitto INVO 345/25/20 tires. The fronts got an equally impressive 20×10 wrapped in a Nitto INVO 275/30/20 tire. The logical question one might as is how they fit that size wheel on the Sedan chassis? Easy, D3 pushed the fenders out very discreetly to allow for the huge meats on all four corners. Lurking behind those shiny 3-piece wheels are the world’s only Alcon Super Kit Brake System tied into a set of D3 stainless steel brake lines. D3 worked with Alcon UK engineers to develop a system that will outperform even the most advanced braking systems. One aggressive push of the brake pedal leaves little doubt that Alcon & D3 were successful with their development. The suspension that keeps the Ultra V planted comes from D3 in the form of Competition Lowering Springs and Sway Bars. Push the car hard through a corner and you will notice that the car stays planted and does not roll over thus staying securely glued to the ground. To further enhance the overall driving experience, D3 added a set of chassis bracing components to reduce torsional flex and minimize deflection. With deflection in mind, they replaced the oem soft rubber bushings and used the latest in technology from Whiteline in polyurethane bushings. The car now offers a much more direct feel giving you confidence in understanding what the car wants to do when pushed hard in the corners. The total result of this build is the most advanced Cadillac CTS-V Sedan in the world bar none. This car represents more than just a high horsepower car that’s good for late night highway pulls, but a car that can reach high speeds and then hang a sharp left without reservation. D3 has once again raised the bar for Cadillac Tuning. The D3 Group has been at the cutting edge of product development and design since the inception of the V Series in 2005. The D3 Cadillac Tuning Program is the world’s only full line tuning program for Cadillac. The Tuning Program encompasses power kits, competition track ready suspension kits and functional competition aerodynamic components.
